Depending on the species a baby whale can stay with its mother for 1-2 years.
Different species of whale have varying gestation periods and amounts of time they spend with their offspring. The humpback whale has a gestation period of about 11 to 12 months. After the calf is born it takes about 11 months before the calf is weaned. The calf will stay with its mother for one year or longer.
