If current trends continue, scientists predict that the snows of Mt Kilimanjaro may disappear as soon as 2022 – largely because of global warming. Between 1912 and 2007, fully 85% of the snow and ice on Kilimanjaro disappeared. Over 25% of what was left in the year 2000 has now melted, and the melting is likely to continue as long as global temperatures continue to rise. Mt Kilimanjaro is just one of hundreds of peaks around the world losing snow and ice due to global warming.
