How long do we “grow” tuna before we harvest them?

That depends on which species of tuna is farmed.  Most tuna is raised to maturity so that it will breed and create the next generation before being harvested.  Skipjack tuna reaches maturity at about a year and a half, though they can reach 10-12 years of age and 77 pounds.

Bluefin tuna, a much more difficult fish to farm, doesn’t reach maturity until 3-5 years.  A bluefin tuna at the end of its natural lifespan (25 years) can weigh 1000 pounds!  Wild caught tuna is much more common, and this species’ population has dropped dramatically in the last 50 years.
