How long do shipping containers last?

Cargo containers made of steel can last for more than twenty years, even when not properly maintained.  Steps can be taken to prevent rusting and thereby prolong the life of these cargo containers.

Smaller shipping containers made of cardboard usually break down after about two months, depending on their environment.

It depends on the level of exposure to the elements. The primary mode of decay that occurs on steel structures is corrosion. Exposure to water and oxygen increase corrosion. Corrosion can be lessened with protective coatings and proper water diversion.
