The Atlantic Salmon spend four years in the ocean.  It lives in the Atlantic until age 2, leaves to spawn, then returns for 2 years, then leaves to spawn again.  The Pacific Salmon never returns to the ocean after it goes to a river to spawn, so they spend about 2 years in the ocean.

The Chinook salmon has a lifespan of about 4-5 years though some are shorter by a couple years, due to swimming back to their freshwater origins earlier. This salmon swims back to freshwater to lay eggs before dying, the females often spending the last 25 days of her life guarding them.
