Most plastic in the ocean begins to degrade in 1 year. But this is only the beginning. They release very harmful chemicals, which affect marine life. Since plastics have existed less than 100 years, animals have not evolved who can digest them. A famous marine scientist Anthony Andrady has said that all plastic that has ever been put into the ocean (last 60 years) is thought to still be there. The famed Great Pacific Garbage Patch, for example, is a huge floating mass of plastics twice the size of Texas, located between Hawaii and California.
