An average lion should live for sixteen years. Although male lions are thirty-five percent larger than their female counterparts, both members live for about the same amount of years.
The oldest lion bred in captivity is Arjun, a lion in Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. A 2008 report put him at 26 years old, far past the average 12 to 16 year lifespan of lions in the wild. Arjun suffers from digestive issues as well as arthritis, both of which are treated regularly. These issues, which likely would have ended his life much sooner were he to live in the wild, are addressed by zoo staff and that is likely why he has managed to live for so much longer than his wild counterparts.
