Much to the chagrin of many, horse flies are prevalent throughout the world, and number about 3,000 species. They can bite, and their bite is often painful, and sometimes the wound itches afterward.
The life span can vary, depending on availability of food, temperature, and whether I am in the room with a fly swatter 🙂
According to Ohio State University, the larval stage is anywhere from one year to two or three years for some species (yes, years!). However, the adults are usually only seen for about a month.
