How long do goldfish stay alive?

Their lifespan varies depending on the species and quality of care. Most household goldfish live six to eight years according to Wikipedia. If the goldfish is well taken care of though, they can live past ten years and when kept in large aquariums or outside ponds, 15 to 20 years is not unheard of. The record for the longest living goldfish was 43 years!

The life expectancy of goldfish varies. The maximum age recorded is 43 years. This however, seems to be the exception rather than the rule. Goldfish that are treated well may live for anywhere from five to twenty years. The length of a domestic goldfish’s life always depends on quality of food, tank filtration, and care by the owner.
