Fruit flies have a relatively short life cycle, lasting 12-14 days from the egg stage to the adult stage. In ideal temperatures (somewhere around 80 degrees F or 27-30 degrees C), a fruit fly can live anywhere from 20-30 days. Because of their short life cycle, fruit flies are good specimens for conducting research; they become sexually mature ten hours after emerging from the pupa and can lay hundreds of eggs in their lifetime.
There are four stages in the life cycle of the fruit fly: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The life span of a fruit fly may be several weeks, depending on habitat type, predation, and species.
