Elephants carry their young longer than any other mammal.  Baby elephants stay in their momma’s belly for a total of 20-22 months.  When the babies are finally born they are huge (duh), weighing in at a total of 150 to 230 pounds!  They then gain almost 30 pounds each week as they grow, drinking more than 20 pints of their mother’s milk each day.

The gestation period of an elephant is about 22 months.  She then gives birth to a calf weighing about 250 lbs and standing over 2 feet tall.
