Chemicals remain in glaciers as long as the glacier is present, and are released back into the atmosphere upon complete melting of the glacier. The chemicals are incorporated into the glacier upon initial freezing. Since glaciers can persist for tens of thousands of years, chemicals being released into today’s atmosphere are from a time long ago when the chemical composition of the atmosphere was quite different.
