The Solar Impulse plane has not yet taken its first flight around the world. This is not due to happen until 2014. In fact, the Solar Impulse HB-SIA has not been designed to fly around the world. It is simply a test aeroplane that is currently being used to validate computer simulation results, technical choices and construction techniques. Never before has a plane successfully flown with the size, weight or speed of this plane, so it is being used to test unexplored areas of flight. It is also, importantly, storing solar energy in the daytime in order to show that it will be possible to fly continuously for 36 hours, when the actual around world flight takes place.
