The original Shamu lived to about 11 years. It was a huge start in the 1960’s but died in 1971. Shamu was a very popular animal that lived to entertain people. The name “shamu” is passed on to every new killer whale every time seaworld ends up buying a new one.

Shamu was captured by Ted Griffin in 1965 and given to SeaWorld. She died in 1971, so she was at least 6 years old. Shamu was the fourth Orca (Killer whale) to be captured. After her death, other killer whales took her place at the SeaWorld exhibit, which continues to this day.
