The Mediterranean Sea the remnants of an ancient ocean, which existed at the time of Pangea. It covered half the globe, and then with ensuing tectonic activity, became what it is today.
Geologists estimate that the Mediterranean Sea became filled within a two year period during the Zanclean Flood which occurred about 5.33 million years ago.
