How long did it take BP to stop oil from flowing into the ocean?

It took BP about 70 days to close the well, and completely sealed it off (making the well “dead”) on September 19, 5 months after the disaster began. That’s when more oil stopped leaking into the Gulf. However, the efforts to clean up the oil — which totaled 200 million gallons — lasted much longer. There were still tar balls found in shrimping nets on November 25, about 7 months after the initial explosion.
