It took BP about 70 days to close the well, and completely sealed it off (making the well “dead”) on September 19, 5 months after the disaster began. That’s when more oil stopped leaking into the Gulf. However, the efforts to clean up the oil — which totaled 200 million gallons — lasted much longer. There were still tar balls found in shrimping nets on November 25, about 7 months after the initial explosion.
