If you are speaking about the California Gold Rush, it began on January 24, 1848 on the American River in Coloma near Sacramento. It ended officially in 1864 (although this year is debatable, some argue that is was 1855 or 1859), the rich surface and river placers were largely depleted and hydraulic mines were the main sources of gold for the next 20 years (California Natural Resources, 2011).
