How long did the Chernobyl disaster last?

A nuclear reactor exploded on April 26, 1986 at a plant in modern-day Ukraine. More than four hundred times more radioactive fallout was released through explosions and fire in the following months than in the Hiroshima atomic bombing, resulting in the evacuation of almost 350,000 people from a wide geographical area. Nuclear rain fell as far away as Ireland. Though much of the surrounding area is now considered safe for resettlement and development, certain areas remain off limits.
