It takes approximately three minutes before brain damage begins to occur from lack of oxygen. Some reports claim it takes up to five, others factor in temperature such as drowning in a frozen lake slowing tissue degredation.
It is not advisable to attempt to stay without oxygen because some cells begin to atrophy immediately they lose contact with oxygen. The brain cells are the worst hit.
Howver, it has been observed that brain cells begin to damage considerably after about three minutes without oxygen.
