How long can it take to decompose to be called biodegradable?

The term “biodegradable” has actually been misused, and is misleading to customers buying goods labeled as such. Biodegradable simply means that a product does not use toxic materials and at some point can be broken down into smaller units to be digested by animals and/or become part of the earth. Industries have not created any sort of standard to regulate the amount of time required to break down a good for it to be considered biodegradable, however, they have set standards as to what is considered compostable (180 days or less).
