It is possible for cacti to go for years without water. The reason why they can survive this long is because they can store water that they live off of while they wait for rain. In a video clip, which is provided under citations, an expert shows a cactus that has been dead for 8 months that still contains water inside of it.
The cactus can survive long periods without rain or any form of precipitation. The cactus does not have leaves, therefore the little surface area allows the least amount of moisture to be given up. The stems of the cactus are incredibly thick, allowing water to be safely stored. Larger cactus plants are able to live for two years or more without water.
