Current photovoltaic panels will last about 20-25 years, depending on the material and the weather conditions. The downside of residential solar panels is that the electricity produced during their lifetime is not enough to offset the installation cost of the panels.
To add panels last about 25 years. Depending on where you live and if your state gives any incentives you will be able to offset the cost of the system. For example, in Louisiana they have a 50% state tax credit per system up to $25,000. If someone wants a 3kw system (no batteries), this will roughly cost around $25,000. With the state tax credit and the federal tax credit it will only cost you $5,000 ($12,500 back from the state, and $7500 from federal)! It won’t take any longer that 5 to 7 years to offset the cost of what you initially paid for!
