It depends on the monkey. Patas and Rhesus Monkeys have similar gestation periods; about 5.5 months, during which time the female gains about 5 kilograms of weight. Baboons, on the other hand, carry their unborn for a little over 6 months, and the mother gains about 20 kilograms of weight. Chimpanzees have gestation periods of 7.5 months, and the mother gains 40 kilograms of weight. Even gorillas and orangutans, classified as apes, do not carry their unborn offspring for as long as humans do; gorillas and orangutans carry their children, on average, for 260 and 257 days, respectively, compared to the average human gestation of 266 days.
