How long after we came to America did we elect a president?

The first explorations of America were in the late 15th Century (1492, ‘Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue’), and the first settlements began in the 16th Century.  George Washington took office in 1789.  Therefore judging by which history books you read, and which  country claims they settled first, there was most likely a gap of over 200 years from when the settlements began and the first President of the US was appointed.
