How long after global warming will the next ice age come?

I found an excellent article from 1997, published by the Quaternary Environments Network, which gives an estimate of climate transitions, such as the one we are experiencing now, taking anywhere from just a few years to centuries to switch to a colder phase. They make the important point that such changes can be abrupt, and that at the time this article was written, science was catching up with the reality that climate change does not necessarily happen in a gradual manner!
