“Silverback” is a term used to describe the dominant male leader of a group of gorillas, so-called because of the gray hairs that grow as the gorilla gets older (like humans). He is the leader of the group, in charge of making important decisions and protecting his own from humans and other competing groups. Male gorillas can grow to be up to 6 feet tall when standing, and weigh up to 315 pounds. Although not silverbacks, female gorillas are smaller and can grow up to 5 feet tall and weigh in at 215 pounds. It is interesting to note that even though these gorillas grow to be so large, they are herbivores, surviving on over 100 different types of plants.
