    Prehistoric dragonflies, which were the largest flying spineless creatures that ever lived, had a wingspan of 30 inches.

    Prehistoric dragonflies were the largest insect ever, with a wingspan of 30 inches (compare to 1-4 inches of todays dragonflies).  Check out the Life in the Undergrowth series to see David Attenborough pull a fossilized one out of a museum.
