There are three different types of species, and there are some slightly differences in size. The West Indian and West African manatees grow to be about 10 feet long and weigh 800-1,200 pounds in adulthood, but can reach lengths of 13 feet. The Amazonian manatees are smaller and shorter, with big individuals measuring 9.2 feet in length and weighing 1,058 pounds. Typically, females grow to be larger than males.
