How large are bark beetles and why do they kill so many trees?

Bark beetles are about 5 mm long wood burrowing beetles. They are capable of causing so much damage because they reproduce quickly and present themselves in large numbers, thus overwhelming even healthy forests. Also, many of the most detrimental forms of bark beetles are invasive species, which are capable of causing a lot of damage in new environments because they lack natural predators, at least initially.
