The best way to keep bugs off of plum trees would be to spray with an insecticide, (a lime-sulfur in addition to a dormant-oil spray is recommended), however for best results, spraying should be done on a seasonal schedule. Try to spray the plum trees in the early spring or late winter, before leaf- out. Insects will also lay their eggs in developing fruit. To reduce the number of insects, clean up fallen fruit off the ground. The best time to spray get rid of pests, such as beetles and bees, would be to spray after all the petals of the flowers have fallen off.
