How is jet (the gemstone) formed?

Jet is created by the decomposition of wood under high pressure. Hard jet is formed by carbon compression and salt water, soft jet is formed with fresh water.

Jet is not like most gemstones, in that is technically not a mineral but rather an organic product. Jet is formed by the decomposition of wood, usually from conifers, over millions of years. The two types of jet, hard versus soft, are distinguished by the type of water in which the wood decomposed; hard jet results from salt water carbon compression, and soft jet results from freshwater carbon compression.
