How important is it for something to be biodegradable if it is green during its lifetime?

There are much better ways for a product to be green during its lifetime aside from ensuring it will be biodegradable. One reason for this is that even items that are supposedly biodegradable will not biodegrade if discarded in a landfill that is sealed from air and water. So, a product achieves a higher level of sustainability if it is designed to be reused after its initial lifetime for another purpose. This is the cradle to cradle approach to design, that it goes from being used for one purpose seamlessly to its new use. Biodegradable products are only beneficial in areas where composting is possible, but should be utilized for food products more than manufactured goods.
