Ocean water, specifically on the surface which is absorbing the vast majority of the sun’s energy, can currently reach temperatures in the 90s. Temperatures this high are possible in the Gulf of Mexico, where many hurricanes originate. All that being said, it is hard to say “how hot the water can get.” Ocean waters were the warmest they have ever been this past July and August and of course if climate change continues, there is potential for ocean waters to become even warmer.
