How have we made coal power more efficient over the years?

Coal-fired power plants really haven’t gotten much more efficient since they first came into use. in the last fifty-odd years, some new technologies have been developed, such as coal gasification and liquefaction, which can make burning coal a little cleaner if carbon-capture measures are taken.

In the past couple of years, China has begun building plants that use a more efficient system involving high-temperature steam. As of last year, the US was still arguing over whether it should implement the same type of plant.
