The use of drip irrigation is one of the primary ways farmers are attempting to reduce their water use. As compared to other methods, like flood irrigation, drip is very precise and limits a great deal of unnecessary evaporation from the fields.
However, it is also very costly and requires a great deal more time than other methods, so its adoption is still relatively low in the grand scheme of things. Apparently, some stimulus money is going to be spent in increasing water use efficiency though, especially in areas with over-taxed water systems like California.
