Tilling and straw mulch have demonstrated their ability to decrease evaporation and precipitation in top soil. These two methods are very important in farming today as soil water evaporation has become more critical. Tilling is the turning of soil often with a plow or other device. Straw mulching is adding straw often to the top 20 cm of soil which not only reduces evaporation, but also increases temperature of the soil. Increasing the temperature of the soil has negative effects on crop yield, which is one side effect of this method.
