Hospitals like the New York Presbyterian Hospital is using the “first hospital-based co-generation plant in Manhattan.” This new technology promises to reduce the emission of 20,000 tons of pollutants each year. The hospital will produce about 60 – 100 percent of their own electricity which will almost eliminate other form of energy consumption.
On nyp.org the describe the technology as being a “7.5-megawatt, combined heat-and-power system burns natural gas in a turbine” this will generate electricity continuously every day of the year. They continue by stating that “heat from the turbine, which is usually wasted as exhaust gas, is captured and reused to generate steam for heating and cooling. The system is slightly larger than a tractor-trailer, with working parts that resemble an oversized jet engine.”
