How has space travel helped us learn about the moon?

Both manned and unmanned flights to the moon allowed us to bring back moon rocks. Studying them helped us date the moon’s formation at about 4.5 billion years ago.  Lunar probes have also helped us figure out how the moon might have formed. The discovery that the moon has an iron core, like Earth’s, means the moon was once probably part of the Earth that broke off when the Earth was struck by a gigantic meteorite not long after is formation.
