Such an answer can be summed up in one word: industrialization. Ever since the Industrial Revolution in different countries, pollution caused by factories, facilities, and vehicles have degraded the environment by significant leaps and bounds. The factories in Detroit and the upper Mid-West have virtually poisoned one or two of the Great Lakes of North America. Smog in our cities from so many vehicles powered by gasoline has been detrimental to places like Beijing and Mexico City. Modern technology of the 21st Century is trying to alleviate and repair this environmental damage, but it may yet be some time before technology and nature can coincide in harmony.
