Catalytic converters work by converting car exhaust into carbon dioxide and water vapor. Emitting carbon dioxide is bad for the air quality and contributes to global warming, but converters also prevent the release of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a toxic pollutant which is converted into carbon dioxide. If carbon monoxide emissions from cars was unregulated it has been hypothesized that there would be a carbon monoxide “blanket” or “wall” over North America over 500 feet high. Great exposure to CO can be fatal as it inhibits oxogen uptake in the blood. Catalytic converters also reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by converting it into nitrogen and water vapor.
