How has the government tried to make more people use public transit?

The government can make public transit more appealing by either taxing gasoline more 9which they will not do because people would be outraged), or by subsidizing the cost of public transportation (which would be effective). the problem with public transit subsidies is that a subsidy generally comes from the federal government, while laws regulating public transit are figured out a local level (either city or state government).

In Westchester County (NY), newer Bee Line buses are hybrid electric / gasoline powered (you can actually see the electric pack it looks like a big white box on top of the bus).
