Climate change causes the average worldwide temperature to rise which in-turn causes the polar ice caps to melt which raises the sea / ocean levels around the world. This affects archipelagos such as the Hawaiian Islands because it means the coasts are moving inland, making larger islands smaller and possibly even completely engulfing smaller islands (although I’m not sure if this has happened with any Hawaiian islands yet).
