Historically people and governments have viewed taking environmental precautions as an impediment to economic growth… or at least the sort of economic growth that China has been experiencing in recent years. Growing in an environmentally responsible way involves a new way of thinking and can also require a sizable monetary investment. China’s economy was growing so fast and to put any sort of environmental requirements on factory production would have likely slowed growth. Of course, we now know that much of the time being environmentally friendly also means achieving higher efficiency, but unfortunately China’s government let factories manufacture goods without any sort of regulation for far too long.
