Though photovoltaic power systems are pollution free during use, creating them is a very energy intensive process that includes large quantities of bulk materials which are either scarce or toxic. This also means that recycling them is a problem, as end-waste must be effectively managed.
However, the energy savings of the solar system overall more than pay back the energy required to make PV panels, and the toxicity of their creation is relatively low when compared to oil and coal refining.
