U2 has used their worldwide popularity to raise awareness about loads of different issues, from social justice to environmentalism.
They began in the mid-eighties, participating in a tour to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. Their first big environmentally-focused tour came in 1992 when they did a fundraiser show for Greenpeace to protest a nuclear processing facility in England.
Today, U2 still tends to focus on social justice in Africa rather than environmentalism, but the message is clear: humanity needs to think about the well-being of everyone and everything on the planet and not just think about themselves.
