One way in which hospitals can move towards being greener is to obtain LEED certification from the Green Building Council. LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, offers buildings opportunities to improve performance and design through sustainable site solutions, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere optimization, materials and finishes, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.
Energy efficient design involves almost every aspect in which a hospital can improve to become more sustainable. There are, of course, minor ways that also make huge differences such as using 100 per cent unbleached natural and sustainable fibers in blankets for patients, especially babies.
