Earlier this year, the Australian government made a $50 million down-payment in the fight to save the iconic Great Barrier Reef. The funding is part of the $200 million Reef Rescue project – the largest single commitment ever made to address the threats of climate change and declining water quality in the reef. Minister for the Environment Peter Garrett said through Caring for our Country the Rudd Government had set a clear objective of reducing dissolved nutrient and chemical discharge from land to the reef by 25 per cent by 2013.
