How is graffiti damaging the environment?

One way is in its removal.  As cities attempt to cleanse their streets of graffiti, they have to use chemicals.  Obviously, these chemicals can be just as, if not more harmful, to the environment than the paint itself; however, typical cleaning agents are more expensive if they are eco-friendly.  In New York City, though, when the municipal government removes graffiti they are expected to use environmentally responsible chemicals.
