All dog breeds are the same species, and we currently recognize the dog as a subspecies of wolf, not a species in its own right. This means that dogs and wolves are Canis lupus, while dogs are Canis lupus familiaris. So all the variety in dog breeds are due to a very small genetic variation. For example, all the differences in the textures of dog coats come from the mixing and matching of just three genes.
