Oil is formed under the immense pressure of the earth from fossils that were deposited in layers below the ocean floors between 130-300 million years ago. As these plant and animal remains were buried quickly by mud in the ocean, they did not decompose quickly, but rather very slowly, resulting in carbon-rich compounds. As these compounds were compacted under large amounts of weight, oil was squeezed from them and started to accumulate.
